Facebook Privacy: How To Make Sure You’re Secure

You love your Facebook account. It allows you to stay in touch with friends and family. You even get to see the latest photos of your friend’s new pet or your grandkids right at your fingertips. Facebook is a great way to stay connected, but you need to make sure your privacy is intact.
After the recent information revelations after the 2016 election, Facebook users all over the world are more concerned with their privacy. Do you know what you need to do to insure your information stays private? Here are a few tips to make sure your Facebook account isn’t giving the Internet too much information about you:
Privacy Settings
The easiest thing to start with when it comes to your privacy on Facebook is to double-check your privacy settings. You can easily do this by going to the top of the page where your profile photo is, click on the arrow on the right, and select privacy settings in the dropdown menu.
Here, you can see who can read your posts, who can send you friend requests, and who can see your friend’s list. Perhaps the most important selection on this page is the last option:
“Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile?”
If you don’t want search engines like Google to show your personal Facebook profile when someone searches for you—make sure you edit this response to say “NO.” It might be a good idea not to have your Facebook profile accessible by search engines.
Timeline & Tagging
After you customize the initial privacy settings page, you should make your way down the list. The next thing you need to work on is your timeline and tagging. This section controls who sees your posts on their timeline, and who can tag you on their own posts.
If privacy is what you seek, then you should edit each of these options to say “Friends.” You should also turn on all of your review options. You wouldn’t want one of your friends posting something on your timeline without your approval.
Location
Facebook can track your location if you use the application on your phone. While the information remains private, there is a way to delete your location history in Facebook. Simply go to this tab, click to view your history and delete it.
If you don’t want Facebook to know your location at all– you can always uninstall the mobile app on your phone, and only browse Facebook on your computer.
Blocking and Language
If someone is harassing you on Facebook, you can block him or her through this tab. You can even create a “restricted friends” list that blocks certain content from people like your co-workers.
You can choose to read Facebook in the language you prefer, or even choose to translate a certain language into English. That way, you can make friends all around the world!
Face Recognition
Facebook is able to recognize your face when one of your friends uploads a photo or video of you. Facebook can then automatically tag your profile to the photo your friend has shared.
If this sounds to Orwellian to you—you can edit this setting to “NO” and photos won’t be tagged of you automatically.
There are more things you can do to ensure your privacy on Facebook if you want to dive in further. You can create custom friends lists so you can share more private content with closer friends and relatives. Or simply spend less time on Facebook apps that require your profile to use them. The best way to keep your information safe is by being aware of what you share.
