What are the Dimensions of Wellness? A Holistic Approach to Senior Wellness
The dimensions of wellness represent essential components of life. To support long-term well-being and a vibrant life as we age, it is important to maintain balance across all the key areas of your life that make up the dimensions of wellness, including Vocational, Intellectual, Social, Physical, Spiritual, Environmental, and Emotional wellness. There’s a difference between aging and aging well. Taking the initiative to actively nurture each dimension of wellness in your life can make that difference.
Friends Life Care’s VigR® Vitality, Independence, Growth, Resilience™ program has created a series of wellness webinars with vetted information and tools to empower you as you plan to age at home. Each video reflects at least one of the dimensions of wellness and offers tips, advice, and knowledge on a wide range of topics, from physical wellness techniques like “A Guide to Pelvic Floor Health for Older Adults” to emotional wellness strategies such as “You Are Not Alone: Strategies to Reduce Feelings of Loneliness and Isolation as We Age.”

The 7 Dimensions of Wellness Explained
There are seven Dimensions of Wellness in total. Each dimension is a crucial part of your life, and neglecting any one aspect can have a negative impact on the others, like a domino effect. That is why proactively planning and nurturing every dimension of wellness is so important. So, what are the dimensions of wellness, and how do they play a role in your everyday life?
Vocational Wellness
Aligning your job, hobbies, volunteer work, and day-to-day tasks with your values and purpose contributes to your overall satisfaction with life. Achieving strong vocational wellness means you are engaged, proud, and fulfilled by your daily activities. You have a unique set of talents and skills, and by continuing to develop and improve those skills, you foster healthy vocational wellness. As you enter retirement, it becomes especially important to prioritize your vocational wellness as your work-life balance shifts and evolves.

Intellectual Wellness
Lifelong learning and the continuous search for knowledge are part of your intellectual wellness. There are many ways to continue learning as you age, including keeping an open mind to new ideas, reading books, and developing new skills. Over 100 people joined us to learn from a speech-language pathologist about “How the Brain Works and What To Do When It Doesn’t.” Even by reading this blog today, you are strengthening your intellectual wellness and continuing your learning journey.

Social Wellness
Establishing a solid support network is integral to your life, especially if you choose to age in place. Positive connections with friends, family, and community groups can enhance both your mental and physical health by reducing loneliness and fostering a safe space for interdependence. This allows you to remain independent at home while still having people you can rely on when needed.

Physical Wellness
Intentionally staying active, eating well, and getting quality sleep all play a central role in maintaining your physical well-being. Physical activity can support diverse brain functions such as multitasking and creativity, and it helps prevent memory loss, cognitive decline, and dementia, according to HelpGuide.org. Many activities can benefit older adults, including balance, strength, flexibility, and endurance exercises. Friends Life Care’s VigR® program offers a wide variety of online workout videos you can watch now, allowing you to find an activity that fits your abilities and interests.

Spiritual Wellness
Spiritual wellness represents having a sense of purpose and finding meaning in your life that is greater than yourself. Developing your own values and belief system can help guide your day-to-day decisions. Practicing mindfulness, cultivating gratitude, and engaging in acts of service are just a few ways you can create purpose and deepen meaning in your daily life.

Environmental Wellness
An essential key to a healthy life and a successful aging in place plan is having a comfortable living space that promotes safety, independence, and well-being. Your environmental wellness is about fostering a healthy relationship with the world around you and feeling comfortable in your environment. Respecting and caring for your surroundings can positively impact your overall well-being.

How Senior Wellness Programs Support Aging in Place
Participating in senior wellness programs that align with your personal goals can play a meaningful role in supporting a healthy, fulfilling life at home. The right program provides a space to nurture every area of well-being while choosing to age in place. Holistic senior wellness programs take a whole-person approach, recognizing that physical health, emotional balance, social connection, and spiritual purpose are interconnected. Instead of focusing on just one aspect of health, these programs take into account your feelings, emotions, and spiritual goals when developing plans to boost your overall health.
At Friends Life Care, we believe in the philosophy of VigR®, which stands for Vitality, Independence, Growth, and Resilience. Our program, specifically designed for seniors aging in place, offers workshops, webinars, in-person group events, and member meetings to keep you engaged and connected.
