George’s Story: Love, Caregiving, and Aging at Home
After more than 21 years of membership, 91-year-old George Boyd reflects on his experience with Friends Life Care’s aging in place support and caring for his wife, Sandra, throughout her Alzheimer’s journey. He shares how concerns about the rising cost of long-term care led him to begin planning for the future, knowing they wanted to remain in the home they loved. “We didn’t know what sort of policy we should get, but we did know that we wanted to stay at home.”
George and his wife, Sandra, lived in the same home for more than 50 years. As they planned for the future, remaining at home was always their priority. George shares how the support of Friends Life Care, including care coordination, guidance, advocacy, and compassionate caregivers, helped both him and Sandra through one of the most difficult seasons of their lives.
George also never wanted his family to have to support him physically, emotionally, or financially as he aged. Reflecting on Sandra’s passing, he shares how meaningful it was that she was able to remain in the home she loved, surrounded by comfort and familiarity. “There she was in her own bed, in her own house that she’d lived in for, golly, 50 years.”
Today, George is grateful to have trusted support in place and the confidence of knowing he has guidance available when he needs it.

The Value of Planning Ahead
One of the things George appreciates most about Friends Life Care is that support began long before he or Sandra needed significant assistance. While they were still healthy, they were connected with a Care Coordinator who took the time to understand their goals, lifestyle, and desire to remain at home. Rather than waiting until a crisis occurred, George’s Care Coordinator helped identify opportunities to make everyday life easier. When caregiving responsibilities began to increase, she suggested trying an in-home caregiver for a few hours each morning, an option George hadn’t previously considered.

What stood out most to George was the proactive and personalized approach. His Care Coordinator regularly checked in by phone and through home visits, offering guidance and recommendations without pressure. Having a trusted professional focused on his and Sandra’s well-being gave George confidence that he didn’t have to navigate aging and caregiving challenges alone.

By Sandra’s Side
As Sandra’s Alzheimer’s progressed, George found himself navigating the realities of a long caregiving journey. Because he had planned ahead and established a support system, he did not have to face those challenges alone. His Care Coordinator helped him understand Sandra’s changing needs and identify when it was time to bring in additional support.
Eventually, George welcomed a live-in caregiver into their home. What began as a practical solution quickly became a meaningful relationship. The caregiver provided compassionate, skillful support for Sandra. After Sandra’s passing, she continues to check in on George, a reflection of the genuine connection they had built during that difficult time.
Today, George remembers Sandra’s passing as peaceful and dignified. She was able to remain in the home she had loved for more than 50 years, surrounded by familiar comforts and supported by people who truly cared for her well-being.
