Workshop leader: Timothy Shapiro, M.D.
While most of us don’t want to think about our mortality, let alone talk about it, having substantive conversations with your doctor about your end-of-life preferences is worth the discomfort. As discussed in Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, research has shown that people who do so are far more likely to die in peace and in control of their situation, while their family members experience less anguish. In an interactive dialogue, cardiologist Dr. Shapiro of Lankenau Hospital will discuss the importance of having these conversations with your doctor early and often. He will also discuss how to have the conversations within the limited appointment time of todays managed care system. Dr. Shapiro is looking forward to having a lively dialogue and as a suggestion, he recommends reading
Being Mortal in advance, although it is not necessary to do so in order to benefit from this workshop.
Dr. Shapiro graduated from Yale University School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He has worked for over 20 years as both a clinical and interventional cardiologist. He is presently the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program at Lankenau Medical Center.
