Need More Preparation (Score 1–5)
A readiness score of 1–5 means there is work to be done to age in place safely and independently. To improve your score, let’s start by revisiting the three steps to creating a balanced future.
Step 1: A Safe Living Space
Does your home have the accessibility features to allow you to age in place safely? A walk-thru of your interior can help identify areas of risk or where modifications are needed. Are there fall hazards, such as loose throw rugs, high stairs, and loose rails? Are there areas in a bathroom or outside the house that become slippery? Where can grab handles be installed? Creating a safe living space will allow you to move freely and reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
Step 2: Seven Dimensions of Health
Enjoying a healthy, low-stress retirement and balanced life means understanding and nurturing all seven dimensions of wellness:
- Physical wellness
- Emotional wellness
- Social wellness
- Intellectual wellness
- Spiritual wellness
- Environmental wellness
- Occupational wellness
Consider taking the Princeton UMatter Wellness Self-Assessment. This can help you understand which dimensions you may have been neglecting so you can take steps to strengthen those areas of wellness. For example, if social wellness is lacking, consider learning to use technology to communicate with loved ones and join groups that share your interests.
